Cossacks Edge Past Beavers, 5-4
|
The Kyiv Cossacks withstood an impressive performance by Portland third baseman Marco Estrada to defeat the Beavers, 5-4, at Kyiv Grounds. Estrada was 3-3 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. Kyiv reliever Bob Rendahl was the winner. His record is now 3-1. The losing pitcher was Victor Velasco. Kyiv currently is in first place in the Federation League Knuckleheads Division at 65-50.
The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Kyiv third baseman Jeremy Gillespie, facing Victor Velasco, had a run-scoring sacrifice fly. It gave the Cossacks the 5-4 win.
"Great to get the crowd on its feet," Gillespie said.
